The Courage Cup Prepares to Welcome the Kids of Work to Ride to the 5th Annual Courage Cup. The Meltzer group, First Chukker Foundation, and aka Join Microstrategy and Legal Times as Sponsors

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Andrea Rodgers, President and CEO of The Courage Cup, an IRS designated 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation established to help at-risk urban youth, is pleased to announce that The Meltzer Group, Lincoln Mercury, and aka, a division of Korman Communities have come on board as sponsors of the 5th Annual Courage Cup.

The Courage Cup raises money to benefit programs in the mid-Atlantic region that give disadvantaged children individualized attention and a positive alternative activity to keep them in school and off the streets. The Courage Cup supports Inner City Outings in Washington, DC and Work to Ride in Philadelphia, PA.

The Courage Cup’s largest annual fundraiser, Meadow Matches, a day-long polo event which many in DC now consider a staple of the Summer Social Calendar, will take place on Sheila C. Johnson Field at Great Meadow Polo Club in The Plains, Virginia on Saturday, June 21, 2008. Ms. Rodgers has named Michael Saylor Honorary Chairman of Meadow Matches 2008. “I am proud to be supporting, and associated with an organization that provides such unique learning opportunities to at-risk children in our community. Not only are these kids learning, but they are developing life skills and are
shown how important education is to their future,” said Michael Saylor.

Traditionally, the youth of the Work to Ride program play along side professional polo players in the annual Courage Cup match at Meadow Matches on the third Saturday in June. This year, some of the youth from Work to Ride will be sporting The Meltzer Group polo jerseys as they take on Team MicroStrategy in the 5th Annual Courage Cup match.

In addition to the Courage Cup match, Legal Times and aka, the new luxury division of Korman Communities, will host “Gavels & Mallets”, a charity segway polo match featuring Summer Associates from Washington area law firms. They will also  host a VIP reception for Summer Associates and others from Washington’s legal community in a private tent at Meadow Matches. “Washington’s legal community has a proud history of supporting programs that provide opportunity for tomorrow’s leaders. As an integral part of this community, Legal Times is delighted to serve as media sponsor of
this year’s Meadow Matches event. We’d like to encourage every law firm in Greater Washington to join us on June 21st to support this worthy cause,” said Kenny Day, Director of Advertising at Legal Times.

Legal Times serves one of the largest and most important parts of the region’s economy, and I couldn’t be happier to have their support this year as our media sponsor for Meadow Matches 2008,” said Ms. Rodgers.

Lincoln Mercury plans to showcase their line of Lincoln automobiles at Meadow Matches. In addition to having vehicles on display, their cars will be used to deliver champagne and promotional items to the crowd during the traditional stomping of the divots.

“Lincoln Mercury is excited to be a part of the Meadow Matches,” said Brad Jones, Ford Lincoln Mercury, Marketing Manager-Washington Region. “We are glad to sponsor an organization with such a great cause, supporting youth in the Washington, DC area.”

In addition to supporting the Work to Ride program in Philadelphia, The Courage Cup supports Inner City Outings, a community outreach program in Washington, DC that works with local social service agencies to provide low-income, inner-city youth with wilderness experiences. The D.C. ICO program works to instill positive outlooks, environmental awareness, appreciation for wilderness, physical fitness, and leadership
skills in young people who often would not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy or experience the outdoors. ICO currently partners with and serves the following communities and service agencies:

  • Beacon House – serving the Edgewood Terrace neighborhood and surrounding Ward Five communities in Northeast D.C.
  • Highland Addition – serving the Highland Addition housing development in Anacostia.
  • Wheeler Creek – serving the Wheeler Creek housing development in Anacostia.

aka also plans to host a divot stomp break, and will give away a weekend stay to the person who finds the specially marked promotional item. “aka has been such an amazing sponsor this year,” said Ms. Rodgers. “Not only have they been extremely generous financially, but they have invited The Courage Cup to use space in their stunning building right in the heart of Washington for our volunteer meetings. aka has donated rooms for the kids of the Philadelphia based, Work to Ride program, and will welcome the kids to their luxurious Herndon, VA location with a poolside cookout on Friday night. It has been a great partnership, and one we hope to continue for years to come.”

The First Chukker Foundation is an organization committed to positive social and environmental change, as well as increasing the awareness of Polo in the Greater Washington Metropolitan Region. Besides playing polo at Meadow Matches for the third year in a row, the First Chukker Foundation is also a sponsor of the event. Ms. Rodgers said, “The Courage Cup and First Chukker Foundation have both grown quite a bit since we both debuted in 2006. There is a strong bond of friendship between those who volunteer for The Courage Cup and those who play for First Chukker. They are adding more female players to their ranks, and that is very exciting! I look forward to seeing them take the field on Saturday!”
