UCAP was established in 1964 and was designated as the official Community Action Agency (CAA) for Prince George’s County in 1978. UCAP, a non-profit 501(c)(3), is the leading advocate for communities of people facing deficiencies in education, affordable housing, economic stability, and adequate health care access. UCAP is dedicated to providing ample services to individuals and families whose quality of life has been negatively impacted by poverty, unemployment, homelessness, crime, and inadequate public health services. Through UCAP’s rigid outlay of programs, the residents (including individuals and families) of the County are able to achieve stabilization and become self-sufficient members of the greater community.

UCAP’s mission is to Alleviate poverty; Improve awareness of the needs of low and moderate income residents; and Maximize the quality of life for residents of Prince George’s County and impoverished individuals throughout the State of Maryland. In 2008, UCAP served 15,420 individual clients, and 10,478 families. Due to the continued rising living costs, UCAP projects a total client base of 17,000 individuals and 13,000 families for 2009.

Because a disproportionate number of residents face unprecedented challenges in various areas in order to maintain a healthy, productive quality of life, the United Communities Against Poverty, Inc., has implemented the following resources and services to assist in aiding struggling residents:

Courage for Kids is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, registered in Virginia as The Courage Cup. Our mission is to create, find, and support programs for at-risk urban youth that directly improve the health and well being of those children in the Mid-Atlantic region through financial support and volunteer commitment. Courage for Kids strives to make a lasting difference in the lives of children, their families, and our community…one need at a time.

In 2011, Courage for Kids is partnering with Bright Beginnings Child Development Center and CentroNia to sponsor all the children in Pre-K. Upon graduation, each at-risk child will receive a backpack filled with books and school supplies to take with them as they start Kindergarten. We are also working to supply Dr. Bear’s Closet at Children’s Hospital with books and toys to help boost the spirits of their young patients. A well-stocked Dr. Bear®’s Closet ensures that every patient has a gift for holidays, birthdays and most importantly, a little something to serve as a reward for their courage in fighting an illness.

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Courage for Kids has organized a team of volunteers to participate in Hands on DC’s main event, their Work-a-thon which is held every spring. During the Work-a-thon, more than 2,000 volunteers spend the day at more than 30 D.C. public schools. The work typically involves projects such as painting, cleaning, or landscaping. Other projects require greater skills and resources, such as repairing bathrooms, laying carpet, building tree boxes or wiring classrooms for Internet access. Creating a better environment for learning is just one of the ways volunteers help local students. They also raise money to fund college scholarships administered by local tutoring and mentoring organizations, and they learn about the condition of and the people involved in the schools. That knowledge helps build support for public education.
